It was a scorching afternoon on the island of Nusa Penida when four kind-hearted travelers stumbled upon a heartbreaking sight—two tiny puppies, barely clinging to life, nestled in a hole in the ground. Their frail bodies were riddled with fleas and ticks, their bellies sunken from starvation. Coco and Kala, as they would later be named, were newborns with no mother in sight, no food, and no hope. Had these travelers arrived just a day later, the little souls might not have made it.
Determined to give them a fighting chance, the group carefully scooped up the weak, shivering puppies and rushed them to the nearest veterinary clinic. Nusa Penida, a beautiful yet remote island, has very few veterinary facilities, but luck was on their side—they found a vet willing to help. Coco and Kala received urgent medical care: vitamin injections to strengthen their fragile bodies, deworming to rid them of parasites, and soothing treatments to ease their suffering.
With the first step toward survival complete, the real journey began. The travelers, now deeply attached to the tiny warriors, showered them with love, food, and warmth. But they knew that staying in Nusa Penida meant limited chances of survival. They had to get them to Bali—a place where they could heal and thrive.
After reaching Bali, the rescuers faced another challenge: every shelter they contacted was at capacity, unable to take in more dogs. Desperate but unwilling to give up, they reached out to us, the Bali Dog Association. How could we say no? These puppies had already fought so hard to survive. We knew that if we didn’t take them in, their fight might end too soon.
And so, Coco and Kala arrived at our sanctuary—tired, weak, but alive. Slowly, they are regaining strength, learning what it means to be safe, loved, and cared for. Their journey is far from over, but with each passing day, their eyes shine a little brighter, their tails wag a little stronger.
These two tiny souls remind us why we do what we do. Every dog deserves a chance, a home, and a life filled with love. Coco and Kala survived because a few strangers chose kindness over indifference. Let their story be a reminder: no act of compassion is ever too small—it can mean the difference between life and death.
Send your love to these little fighters and never forget—the world is a better place when we choose to help those who cannot help themselves. Dogs like Coco and Kala deserve better, and together, we can make that happen!
